The open top cylinders at the right allow the plunger to be pulled up through the pipe to change the cup leathers on deep wells.

In order for a windmill or a hand pump to pump water, a lift cylinder is needed. The size and style is determined by several factors, the amount of water needed, the static water level in the well, the size of the windmill, etc.
